MATERNITY SHOOT DECISIONS: ALONE, AS A COUPLE OR WITH THE FAMILY?
For most of the women who decide to have their pregnancy photographed, the decision is theirs alone. It’s might be mum-to-be who decides, but nothing says the experience can’t be shared. Frequently couples come to my studio together for their first ever family photo, mum, dad and baby-to-be. Sometimes a partner is there to offer support from the sidelines. Often they are part of the shoot. By nature, Dads take a little more warming up, but I love it when I’m able to capture the love and partnership behind the pregnancy. On a great shoot my presence becomes all but ignored, and the connection between two loving parents is all that seems to matter. Clients have talked of the emotional intensity of these shoots. That chance to leave the world behind and celebrate what is happening with unremitting focus can be incredibly powerful for both partners. I am always privileged to witness that magic when it happens.
No one says it needs to be your partner who comes with you. I have shot pregnancy portraits that include older children in the same family. Children are amazingly intuitive and the celebration of you and your bump will not leave them unaffected. It can be a great chance for a young child, whose world is about to experience massive change, to understand what’s going on. I have also had maternity photography sessions that involve close friends, sometimes with more than one pregnant mother. I would encourage all my clients to think about the people they would like to share the experience with. Like all celebrations, they are always best when shared. We can split the shoot into stages to capture you alone in one session, and group shots in a second session. Have your cake and eat it.
